On our first full day in Japan, we plan to take the Tokaido Shihkansen south to visit Kyoto and Osaka. We got up around 4.30am (already light outside, since Japan don't have daylight saving time).
Inside Tokyo Station
We plan on taking the 6.36 am Hikari to Kyoto. Since Kanda is just north of the main Tokyo station, it took less than 5 minutes to get to the Tokyo station.

Upon arriving at the station. We stop by a food store and purchase whole bunch of food (bento box, drinks, deserts and snacks) for the train trip

This is the view of Mt. Fuji from the shihkansen. I was told that most of the time the full view of the mountain is blocked by the clouds. I guess we were very lucky to get a clear shot of the mountain.
The new Kyoto station was opened in 1997. The modern structure houses a department store, hotel, theater, shopping mall and government offices and several restaurants in this 15 story sturcture.

Toji (eastern temple) is well known for its five stories pagoda, and it is the tallest temple in Japan standing at 57 meters.
An interesting structure on the way to Shin-Osaka. It is Sanyo's Solar Ark, standing 37 meters tall and 315 meters wide. It is a solar energy museum in the Gifu prefecture.
Dotonbori is a single street with resaurants and shops lining up on either side of the street. The street runs along the Dotonbori canel. It is a part of the Namba district of Osaka
